School of Rock – Day 7 – Planning and Pathways

SUMMARY

I learned more about how to play the bass and read music and enjoyed asking the guest speaker questions that I had been wondering about.

CLASSROOM (THEORY & ANALYSIS)

Holistic Songwriting by Friedemann Findeisen

Something that caught my attention was how different artists have small details that set them apart from others.

Score: 4

LAB (THEORY PRACTICED)

-there is no wrong place to start writing a song between lyrics, chord progression, and melody but it is easier to start with a chord progression rather than a melody because the chords will serve as a guide for the notes that we choose for a melody.

– An average melody has about 4 to 5 syllables per measure

Score: 2

I learned how to tune the bass, how to hold the guitar, pick, and how to strum a guitar, where to put my fingers, and how to read and play some chords.

Score: 2

OUTSIDE (CREATIVITY & THE BRAIN)

The game that can give you 10 extra years of life.  (20 minutes)

I think it’s really cool that when we are playing games we are more likely to tackle obstacles with more creativity and that we are more likely to ask for help when we are playing a game.

Your score: 2

STUDIO (SONGWRITING)

Do THIS with every song you write | Hit Song Architect S1E3

The most interesting thing I learned was that there is a structure for writing songs. (Intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, chorus)

Score: 4

CONTROL ROOM (RECORDING & MIXING)

Soundtrap tutorial 5 – Arranging the song

Like a story, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution.

WHAT I LEARNED and PROBLEMS I SOLVED

TODAY’s ACTIVITY EVALUATION

Today I learned more about how to read music and I enjoyed asking questions to the guest speaker. The problem I solved today was being able to reach all f the strings on the fretboard.

Content (The WHAT)

Rating: 3

The part of the material that interested me the most was the documentary and the guest speaker.

Process (The HOW)

Rating: 4

The activities that engaged me the most were practicing and the guest speaker because practicing is something I enjoy, the guest speaker was engaging to me because he was answering questions about music that
I had wondered about.

CLASSROOM

How Bass Works (47 minutes)

Most basic chords have the tonic as the lowest note.

The term “pulling out all the stops” comes from organs which had stops to turn certain pipes on and off.

Bass is younger than others, only four centuries old.

Chromatic scales can be used to make a darker, more sophisticated sound.

LAB

3 ways to use Hookpad’s MIDI drag-drop feature (you can create basslines and more and export to Soundtrap and other DAW – digital audio workstations)

I found how she talked about being who lived in your walls and gave you creative inspiration and how she used metaphors for separating yourself from your work life to be interesting. I think the idea of not being fully judged for your work would be nice if there was lots of bad criticism but would also not be good if your work turned out to be nice.

Safety

Watch 3-minute video preview: https://www.hrmvideo.com/catalog/listen-smart-safely-handling-the-power-of-sound

  • Goal: listen to music in a way that it will enrich but not harm you
  • 10%-20% of high schoolers have hearing damage
  • Hearing damage can happen in one occasion, doesn’t have to be constant
  • No cure!
  • Temporary Threshold Shift: “hearing hangover”
  • Wearing earplugs doesn’t change the quality of sound but just the volume
  • High-frequency loss is most commons with musicians
  • Distancing yourself from the source and earplugs are the best way to prevent hearing loss
  • Stimulants while listening to music can increase the risk of hearing damage
  • Resting your ears is important, space out concerts
  • 70 dB, no risk
  • 85 dB, risk after 8 hours
  • 91dB, 2 hours without damage
  • 100 dB, 15 minutes without damage
  • 115 dB, 1 minute without damage
  • 140 dB, immediate damage and pain
  • Symptoms of damage, tinnitus, muffled hearing, and other mental and physical problems like irritability, depression, high blood pressure, and fatigue
  • damage is done when the cochlea hair cells in the inner ear are damaged, they do not grow back. These are what interpret vibrations and turn them into what we hear
